   My Host, and I suspect a few others, do not allow HTTP loopbacks which as far as I can see means that I cannot have trackback or pingback (and possible update services) from my installations.

   My question is whether there is a workaround for this - it must affect many people, and whether future upgrades will address this matter.

   Don't know of any workarounds. I would say if your host is not suited for WordPress then you should go with a different host. It'll make your life easier.
