• I am proposing a WordPress CMS website for a prospective 300-member golf-course client and am looking for suggestions for

    1. a quality golf theme (desperately need)
    2. relevant modules that might be apply in this case
    3. any other WP functionality or issues you can think of

Among other wants, the client would like members to be able to interact by posting photos and listing modest classified ad stuff like a boat for sale or a cottage for rent, and some functions would be shielded from outsiders.

So far I am intrigued by AWPCP’s “Another WordPress Classifieds Plugin” and the “Simple Press” Forum (any feedback on these appreciated).

All theme and module and WP tricks & functionality suggestions welcomed!!

  • I would say with 300 members and possible users (posting classifieds) go with WordPress Mutli-User if only for the BuddyPress social media/networking component which also includes a one-click installation of the bbpress forum. At this time, BuddyPress is not available yet for single WP. While WPMU is known as multi-blogs platform as well, don’t let it stop you as you can just stay in main site and set up BuddyPress. If members want to also blog, then you’re already set up.

With the BuddyPress memberships and groupings, you can set up classified ads section or even category for the classifieds that members can go to either in another blog or through an instant forum. The set up can be completely private for members eyes only. There are just so many configurations to consider and use if you know what to do.

As for a “quality golf theme” – any existing theme in our free themes directory and the commercial themes directory can be transformed to a golf theme.

In all the above, you would need some experience with WordPress and skills in HTML CSS PHP if you want to customize theme/s for the whole site (WPMU, BuddyPress and bbpress) components to have a seamless look plus you need a good webhosting service.

On another note – “relevant modules” sounds like you’re coming from Joomla or Drupal background, so good for you for considering WordPress for the job.

Thing is, what kind of timeline are you looking at?

I like the one-click convenience of installing WP via Fantastico at the ISPs that I use, so I have always dismissed WPMU and BuddyPress out-of-hand because I did not want to get into the install business – especially knowing that WPMU will eventually merge with WP. But, your suggestion is intriguing and I will look again (I guess I would initially look for a reliable host that automates install of WPMU and BP – in case you know one that delivers on its promises.

Are there any good BP demo sites out there with which I can get familiar with BP from the end-user point of view?

Also, regarding your comment about needing CSS knowledge are you implying that if I get a quality 3rd party WP theme (which I assume also works on WPMU) that I may need to get or develop a look-alike theme for the Buddypress portion of my site? Or does any WP theme also extend to the BP section by design?

Also, I have no experience with BP so my first question is whether BP is too over-the-top for a staid? golf club site, but maybe not.

Anyway, time-wise I am just in the proposal stage so if all went well I would probably begin development in 3 or 4 weeks at the earliest.

There’s no fantastico for WPMU, and BP is a plugin for WPMU, this plugin enables the one-click installation of bbpress forum.

You can find that in WordPress Showcase of BP sites

For more info about BP – http://buddypress.org/
To test-drive BP backend, get free account at – http://testbp.org/

Check out buddypress.org site for BP themes and there are some which have corollary WP themes bundled or offered as well.

whether BP is too over-the-top for a staid? golf club site

Ok, I didn’t expect “staid” golf club members. When you mentioned 300 members, I assumed it was necessary for us to know how many users there would be. I have to say, I know many “non-staid” golf club members 🙂 If you or a webmaster is going to be the ones who will input everything in the site including classifieds for the members, then go with single WordPress installation.

Plugins like WP Event Calendar and Classified Ads Plugins in WP repository would help you get the information out. Besides, as you know WP and WPMU merge will be coming soon, BuddyPress will become a WP plugin as well.

Personally, I get “claustrophobic” when there are 300 users in one WP installation, I prefer to organize them in seperate WPMU blogs. But since it is not the case with the users in your end, yup, WPMU might just be over the top for a staid golf club 🙂

In any case, you have enough time to decide on WP vs WPMU/BuddyPress/bbpress. I noticed you mentioned “relevant modules” in your first post. That’s usually Expression Engine, Joomla or Drupal lingo 🙂 Are you more familiar with the other applications?
