Hi, is there a plugin which lets me display x number of characters/words for each post on the index page archive/category pages, with a "read all" link to the actuall article? Thanks.

Don't worry aboout the Loop. In those files you've mentioned above just replace "the_content" with the code suggested on the plugin's page; or "the_excerpt" with the new code. That's it.
