I'm not sure if this is exactly on topic. But I hope someone will be able to answer me anyway. I am curently looking for a host for my website as well as my blog, and I have been looking for a while. I know about bluehost and dreamhost.
Though they seem great and cheap enough for what they offer, the thing is, I simply don't need as much space. I only need about 100-200mb with 5gb of transfer a enough subdomains and mysql databases for a few blogs and guestbooks. And I have been hoping for something cheaper than 8$/mo. Does anyone know a reliable and cheap enough web host for me?
I do hosting http://www.valuedwebs.com 30 a year... email me at heather@valuedwebs.com and ill just set you up as i still need to verify the payment processing on my site. I currently host about 30 plus sites and no complaints as of yet :).
Whoa, sounds great. Is it a permanent thing? Or does it expires some time?
The coupon is for Dreamhost's 7 year anniversary (hence no idea when it will expire) and the special discount is only for the first year.
However, AFAIK, there's no reason why you cannot transfer away at a later date if you so desire.
By the way:

Its right in the top menu, right next to this forum.
Yes I have seen that, and they look great. But as I said, I don't need as much as these host offered and I'd like to have something that's a bit cheaper than that.
There are quite a few hosts with all different price ranges on findmyhosting.com I found my host, doorhost there and have been happy.
A Small Orange Hosting has some great low-priced packages if that's what you're going for. I've been happy with ASO ever since I switched over to them about a month ago.

Try LaughingSquid. A cheap, WP-sanctioned host with great support and a lot of what you're looking for.
I also have another question. When looking for host, which platform is preferable? Does it have a significant influence in the quality of service?

When dealing with WordPress, Linux/Apache is preferred.
I just signed with Dream Host, it seemed the best cost-benefit on the market. By the way if anyone need a promo code you can use "fairhost", it will cut as much as $90 from their price.

Consider Dreamhost still. Don't go for a bargain, changing hosting later is WAY more expensive.
see http://www.arhisstudios.com/blog/
it is hosted there, with an image gallery and some other sites too, on the same account.
Use coupon code Arhis25 for a $25 discount, no matter what package you select.

If you want to support WP: http://wordpress.org/hosting/
I use http://www.ahosted.com - had no probs, although they usually only accept blog sites
