I must be missing something. You linked to a site on WP.COM and a theme on WordPress.COM.
I think you mean theme, not plugin.
There are a lot of magazine type themes out there. Google is your friend here. You can, of course, always check out http://wordpress.org/themes/

I’m just wondering if there is something available in plugin format for wordpress.org that looks similar to the blog that I had as an example.

I’ve already found a theme that I’m setting up but just trying to figure out if there’s a way to post a feed that looks a little nicer. or with a user interface. but maybe I’m missing something i’m fairly new to wordpress

No, that’s a theme, not plugin thing. You can, theoretically, modify a theme to change how it looks. What theme are you using and what do you want to change.

i figured out how to get the blog moved to the static page. thanks to everyone that replied.
