[resolved] Long descriptions cut off (7 posts)

I'm importing a csv file with many entries. The long description, which is usually several sentences, is imported fine on some but is only partially imported on others. There is no consistency to this and it happens in about half the entries. There are no unusual characters, symbols etc. I have no empty columns. It appears that all other columns of information are ok.

Since I have 200 entries, it is important that I get this import function working and don't have to copy and paste every truncated long description.

    Hi Terrisi,

It's important to figure out here what is the difference between a truncated listing and an untruncated one.

Can you post 3 descriptions of each--trunc'd (and which character it stopped on, as well as the rest of the description), as well as the untrunc'd ones.

Sure. I'll give you some representative samples. First the truncated as they are after import and then how they should actually be. All examples in this order: a=imports as, b=should import as.

    1a. A cultural school

1b. A cultural school, founded by Maria Esther Carrillo, that contributes to the development of Hispanic children's cultural identity. Presented annual Hispanic Cultural Festival of Tampa.

2a. The Arts Council supports and promotes arts and culture in Hillsborough County.

2b. The Arts Council supports and promotes arts and culture in Hillsborough County. It provides grants and workshops for organizations and individual artists; contracts arts and cultural groups for arts education; hosts an online calendar of arts events; and works to promote lifelong learning and cultural enrichment to benefit citizens of Hillsborough County. It is governed by a 15-member board of directors appointed by the County Commissioners.

3a. Not-for-profit founded in 1959 and an art club that enriches the cultural climate of the community. A membership organization that holds monthly meetings, demonstrations and exhibitions at various venues. Works and hosts annual Open Show exhibition annually at Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association. Provides donations for children

3b. Provides donations for children's art lessons at Center Place and a scholarship program for area high school seniors to further their art career.

Now three long descriptions that were not truncated on import:

    1. Founded in 1978, MJPAA is dedicated to affording each student an opportunity to experience the performing arts in a 13,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility. Classes are offered in dance, acting, voice and music, taught by a highly trained professional faculty. Classes are available for children, teens and adults. The Academy not only develops performing artists, but the skills, experience and discipline necessary to succeed in any future endeavor. The Academy presents public performances, concerts, workshops, guest artists, lecture demonstrations, intensive training seminars and summer camps.

    2. Kitefliers Studios is a production company, devoted to the art of innovative storytelling to the broadest possible audience through film, theatre, print and new media. Kitefliers aims to prove that with the best minds, artistic talent and a little common sense, great art doesn't have to be compromised to make a living.

    3. An “on-the-edge” community theatre offering a full season of events. Open auditions. All are welcome to participate on stage and behind the scenes.

Aha. OK, you need to enclose your long descriptions in quotes something like this: "Hi I'm in quotes, and you can use commas freely!", as they are breaking on commas (which the CSV file thinks are column breaks). Try that and re-import.

I'm afraid that did not work. When long descriptions were enclosed in quotes, they failed again. It made no difference.

Please note many descriptions that import ok, have commas in them. Please see previous answer examples. In the examples I gave you, you can see that some descriptions that have multiple commas import correctly. See example #3a above and examples #1 and 2 of those with commas that were ok on import.

Since you mention, quotes as a solution, I would point out that I have some descriptions that did contain quotation marks but they did not import the portion within the quotes either.

Can I get you to link to a sample of your CSV import that shows this problem? We're fixing some bugs with that right now, so if this is being caused by a new problem, I'd like to address it before we release the next version?

You can either provide a link here to a sample, or send me a link via the contact form: http://businessdirectoryplugin.com/contact/

I couldn't delay our site any longer and have copied and pasted the correct long descriptions into each directory entry. I have the original file but the site no longer has the truncated descriptions since I pasted in the right ones.
