Login Loop on forced SSL login

I have some members pages which require the user to be logged in. If SSl is not forced everything works fine and after login the user is returned to the referring page. If SSL is forced then the login form is re-displayed. No errors are displayed. I guess this because cookies are not being set. Can anybody help please – I’ve been looking for a solution for a couple of weeks now?
