  • I am having an issue with the admin back page of the WordPress site I am currently running.

When I first open my browser our website works fine.

When I go to our website’s admin page to login: websitename.com/wp-admin
I get directed to the: websitename.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fbannbiz.com%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1
page as usual. However, once I enter my account name and password to log in to our website’s WordPress back page, I am stuck in an endless loop of our WordPress back page trying to load.

At this point, when I try to access our site again (the regular site, not the back page) I am directed to a page that says the following:

    Websitename Blog

    You must reset your password.

    Enter your new password below:

    New password
    [ ]

    Confirm new password
    [ ]

NOTE: The password must be at least 8 characters long.

    [Reset Password]

    <– Back to Websitename Blog

This page is in basic text, with the underlined pieces being links. There is no formatting to it, and no indication that this page is in any way sponsored by or part of WordPress or our website other than the fact that it shares the same address as our website’s homepage. Such a page (as the one shown above) was never created.

Even when I attempt to reset my password and it sends me to a websitename.com/wp-login.php?action=resetpass&key=8QAMGBhef7u3amgUcvGB&login=jon.perrier
page (that actually is a wordpress page for resetting the password), it will never actually allow me to reset my password to anything. It simply continues to tell me to reset my password on that same page (the last one I linked). This means that I am essentially locked out of the website and can no longer access its back page by any means.

I shouldn’t have to attempt to reset my password, and I should just be able to log in, but I cannot.

Once I close all of my browser windows and try to return to the website, this page no longer appears. It also does not appear for anyone who hasn’t tried to login to the WordPress back page, so they are still seeing the regular site while I am not. To clarify: as soon as anyone tries to access the WordPress back page, they are thrown into the endless log in loop and cannot access even the regular page until they close all their browsers (ie the regular site works fine, but the admin page doesn’t).

  • Do you have any plugins that might cause this issue? If you do I suggest copying your all the plugins in your plugin folder save a backup of it and then delete all the plugins folders and re-try logging in to see if that might have been an issue.

Just make sure you backup your plugin folder..

Not that I’m aware of. But even if in the off-chance it was a plugin issue, there’s no access to the back page to delete any of the plugins or edit anything about the site in any way (if you read my post I think I made it very clear that this was the root of the issue). So it wouldn’t matter.

You don’t have ftp access? I’m talking about delete the folder of the plugin not using the back end of wordpress to delete.

I have cpanel access and ftp file manager stuff is in there. However, I am aware of WordPress’s infamous plugin issues. All I can say in regards to the possibility of a plugin issue is that our WordPress site was running for a few days since the last plugin I installed and it was never even activated. Before that plugin was installed it had been running with the next latest plugin active for a few weeks.

Could you help instruct me on how to locate and remove just the WordPress plugins?

EDIT: And most importantly, do so without messing up anything on our website.

Okay, so I was able to disable all of the plugins through the FTP. I did this by renaming the plugin folder to plugin.deactivate. This allowed me to log in. However, I would like to know how to disable each plugin through the FTP individually so I can figure out which plugin is causing the issue. Would adding .deactivate at the end of specific plugins work in the same way as it did for deactivating all of them?

Yes just rename the plugin to what it was and then you might have to activate it in the wordpres admin section
