local wordpress on non-online attached computer

I did not realize that when you use a local hosted version of wordpress that it still tries to access wordpress online. I no longer have access to the internet where I live currently and performance has taken a real hit when trying to accees my local wodpress. once I go somewhere I can access the internet performance returns to normal. is there anything I can do to change that or is the integration with the internet just too much to easily avoid?
