listing titles in category archive (4 posts)

    hi,
    i am afraid i've missed something because this seems so simple and i cannot find a direct answer anywhere - i've been searching, literally, for hours.

    i only want to take my category archive pages and have them list the title of each post, with that title linked to the permalink for each post.

    i read a support article about the exact same thing here:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=18100#post-103865

    but to be honest i have no clue which response was the one that helped the original author. the replies don't seem to flow, and nothing i read there made enough sense for me to be able to implement this myself.

    so could somebody please help me by letting me know exactly how to do this? beginning with - do i need a category template to make this work? what code needs to be in it? and is there a default category template i can use to modify? because i am far too new at this to create one from scratch... i've been trying.

    sorry if all this is repetitive, but i'm at my wits' end.

    If you're using 1.5 and themes, an easy way to accomplish this is:

    1. Make a copy of your current theme's index.php, and rename it "category.php".

    2. Edit The Loop portion of category.php to whittle it down to just the title link.

    And that's it. You can do the same for date archive pages as well (just make a copy your new category.php, and name it "archive.php").

    Codex: http://codex.wordpress.org/Category_Templates

    I think what you need to do is first, make a copy of your archive template and name it "category.php". Then at the very least delete:

    <div class="entry">
    <?php the_excerpt() ?>
    </div>

    See how that looks. Adjust to suit.

    thank you both for your quick replies!
    yes, i forgot to mention that i am using 1.5 and themes.

    kafkesqui, i really appreciate the ever-so-simple breakdown. i've gotten the listings i want! i'm still tweaking it a little here and there to get it to look exactly how i'd like, but at least i understand it all now.

    pericat, thank you for the reference. i had read that page but couldn't move past the fact that i needed category.php. this will help when i modify my other archive pages.
