Listing Last 5-7 Posts

Kudos to the WordPress Team. Thanks for such a great piece of work.

I have modified the WordPress nolimits theme to my final website design, but I need help with one more thing. I am trying to list the last 5 to 7 posts on my sidebar on the main page. I have tried to find the php tag for this but have not been able too. I have tried searching the codex and support forums, I know its their but I cannot seem to find it. If you know the tag for this function please let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.
