Try setting up a Custom Menu through the dashboard > Appearance > Menus section http://codex.wordpress.org/Appearance_Menus_Screen
Then you can choose what to have in your menu.
Thanks Andrew, but the menu at the top of the page seems to showing (links to) my pages, regardless of what i have setup in the menus screen…thus my problem.

Could you link the website that has the issue?

I would also try deactivating plugins to explore whether any could be responsible.
i currently have no active plugins

When you’ve made your Custom Menu, go to the “Manage Locations” for the ‘primary menu’ and select your menu from the dropdown http://snag.gy/5PVe7.jpg
argh.
missed that. thanks andrew.
is it also possible to have each categories show up inside one of the circles (or to have a page essentially be the filtered category so i could force that page into a circle?

Not sure what you mean, can you link to a website that does this already or link to an illustration?
havent seen an example…but let me try to describe in more detail:
essentially, id like to use a few circles as a “menu” rather than a collection of ALL posts/pages.
instead of clicking on the link in my menu at the top that says “furniture” (which then limits to circles/posts designated as being in the category for furniture)…
is it possible to have an image/text representing furniture in the first circle that would have the same function (after clicking the circle would show all circles/posts in the furniture category)??
