Link single image to attachment page

I really like the gallery function in the new wordpress. My question is, as the image thumbs links to the attachment template page, when I choose to add a gallery on a post, is there a way to make single images in a post link to the attachment page as well?

Some of my posts have several images added here and there (as thumbs) throughout the text, I would like these links to link to the attachment page as well, instead of the original photo. It seems as the only way to have image thumbs linked to the attachment page is my adding a whole gallery somewhere on the post…
