• Re: http://test.woothemes.com/velouk/

After years of using custom CMS systems for doing the same job I am trying to do now, I am very surprised at the lack of control and lack of intuitiveness of the WordPress system.

Having spent hours playing with them template that is supposed be a premium one, ie, not cheap, I find after much tril and error it will allow me to do the simplest of things that I can do in a more traditional web design package and certainly in a custom CMS system.

Unless some one more familair with Word Press can show me how to overcome what seem major obstacles but may be just down to my lack of familarity with this system, then I for one will not be using Word Press for my website.

One of the things that does not seem present is a way of controlling the ranking of a story on the page. I might want a story to remain at the head of the page but others to float down as new ones are added.

You could make a post Sticky. That will keep it at the top.

Yes, thanks saw that option. Will continue to add posts and see how it works. Still so many other things that I know with a convential softwrae package would be easy to add.

Another thing I am at a loss to see how it is done is to have two pages, one called reports, one called results and new posts will be listed on one or the either? Clues on how I may do that if at all?

Further to that, I can see that posts will be divided into categories but what makes that so useful is that the template lists all the posts above that section on the archive page. Would be cool if the template could be edited so it only showed the categories …

Also, how do I stop posts being on the front page

You have to look at it differently 🙂 and be a bit patient waiting for replies. Without knowing what KIND of posts you want to stick anywhere, I can only guess. But let’s try this.

Assuming you have two “types” of posts, I would use categories to sort them into one category page or another. Works pretty well for most people. But if instead you want a sort of secondary home page, you could make a custom page type and put the loop code on that.

As for editing your templates, you can totally do that all you want. I would suggest child themes, personally, but you can customize all you want.

It just takes a bit of work to learn the new terms.

Thanks and to be honest, I’m surprised anyone has answered! This dip into the world of WordPress is simply to evaluate how the CMS compares to a traditional software package where like print publishing (where my history is), designing an interface is more intutive. And then there’s Joolma of course and others. A right minefield and not a loot of time to evaluate them.

As for editing the template, perhaps because its on the ‘playground’ I can’t see any way of getting into the code to edit the templates but will take another look with fresh eyes later…

I recommend working on your desktop copy of theme rather than editing the theme files directly on the server (which you can do under Appearance > Editor as long as you have sufficient file permission). Save a backup of your original files and use a code editor so you have handy features like syntax highlighting. You can either set up a local server to view changes immediately, or upload back to the remote server via FTP.

Thanks for the reply…. I don’t have a desktop version because I’m evaluating the template and its stuck in the ‘playground!’ Also, the Appearence Editor that I have on another test theme isn’t available on this but from what you say, it should be if I was to move theme to my server on purchase.

And, I have only been editing WordPress files for a few days… despite 10 years of adding content through a custom CSM system, this is my diving in at the deep end of web building 10 years after designing one in HTML.

thanks for the help though, gives me hope the template will do the job …

Ah – gotcha. Yes, things should definitely become easier/clearer once you can actually work directly with the theme files – that’s where a lot of the “heavy lifting” happens.

it should be if I was to move theme to my server on purchase.

Yes, exactly. Once you buy it you get a copy of all the files.
