License question (4 posts)

    Hi,

I'm not a license expert, so I've got this little question.

I'm currently working on a theme for a WordPress-powered website for a company (which would make the website commercial, wouldn't it?). Now I'd like to use a SEO-theme (Thematic), which is licensed under GPL, as foundation for my own theme. Now my question is: am I allowed to use this theme as foundation for a commercial website? Or should I rather write a theme from scratch?

    Regards,
    Gideon

I have a pretty much same situation and I would like to know if I have to refer to the original theme designer somewhere in the modified theme? Or is it actually prohibited to mention the original designer if you have modified the theme?

How about the wordpress it self. Can I remove the "powered by wordpress" links from the bottom if I want?

Depends on the theme. If it's a GPL licensed theme then go forth and be merry. With GPL licensed themes, attributing the original author would be polite but not required.

If however the theme author is not using the GPL, then you should adhere to the authors terms for that theme or find another theme.

    Yes.
