    Not got the time to fully debug this, so looking at splitting my dive log and WordPress into separate subsites. A pity – it looked like it was a good solution!

    Looking deeper into the problem, it seems that the plugin is trying to check the user capabilities too early. If I comment out the includes in divebook.php, the Network Admin functions work (but the plugin obviously doesn’t). If I can identify where the calls need to be moved to, I’ll add details here.

    It seems the issue is in the settings.php file! Not sure exactly where the problem is – my first thought was that the add_action is being called too soon, but disabling that line doesn’t help. As it is only in multi-site installs that the problem appears, I’m tempted to move the dive log onto a parallel install, but that isn’t going to help anyone else facing the same problem.
