I am setting up a new site for a client and they don't want it visible to the public till they've approved it. I don't want to have to set up passwords and logins, etc for private viewing and was hoping that if I published a holding page on the index.htm page would that override the index.php and keep the blog invisible until such time I remove the htm page?

index.html and yes I'll do always the same - or if I have to update

but you have to call wordpress with

    domain.tld/index.php

    because domain.tld will call index.html

    ;)

Sorry, I don't fully understand. Are you saying I have to edit something to make the domain call up the index.html instead of index.php? And where do I do that?

Thanks whooami but I work with several programs and WordPress is one of them. I'm more conversant with others. I haven't had to do that before which is why I don't know how to do it. Isn't that why these forums are here? So we can learn?

    Proverbs,

This may not solve the entire problem but you may want to look at the plugin http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-plugins/theme-test-drive

Theme test drive. My son and I used it while building a custom theme and working out the bugs.

I am making an assumption, possibly incorrect that it is not the content that is for approval but the appearance.?.

this may end up being a duplicate post, if so I apologize in advance. My first reply didnt show up when I refreshed and didnt contain anything that looked like it should be caught by askimet.. so here goes again

Isn't that why these forums are here? So we can learn?

of course, but your question isnt specific to wordpress.

I'm of the opinion that there is a gluttony of people jumping on the "lets make money with wordpress" bandwagon, and its no surprise -- there's money to be made. Unfortuntely, a good deal of those bandwagon jumpers simply dont have a thorough understanding of what they are tasked with doing.

I also hold the opinion that those people misrepresent their skills and abilities in order to get wordpress work.

the answer to the original question was actually already answered by the poster previous to me. he/she just didnt word it right.

    Google is your friend:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=directory+index+htaccess&btnG=Google+Search&aq=4&oq=directory+index+

1st link explains it at the top.

Thanks Candace, I'll check that out.

What is happening is I am setting up a site in WordPress for a client but they don't want it visible to the public till they have approved it. The content they have written - it's the design and set up of it that is to be approved.

I really just wanted a front page only showing - much like an index.html page showing so that if the public call up the URL that's all they see. I'd like to give the clients the relevant page addresses for them to view as they are not that web literate and I don't want them logging in as they wouldn't understand where to go to view what they're supposed to be viewing.

With respect to what Monika wrote Whooami, no, I did not understand what she was trying to say. And I have been doing lots of research to try and work it out. I basically was hoping there was some way to have only the index.html show and nothing else if people called up the URL.

I appreciate what you're saying about people jumping on the bandwagon - perhaps you're a programmer, I'm not. And I have never professed to be. But up till now, for some years, I've been setting up websites for clients without having to be a programmer and have done so successfully.

And I have done many Google searches before coming here but still didn't find what I was looking for, so I'll check the links listed above thank you.

Ok, the .htaccess thing was exactly what I wanted - I just did not understand that Monika was telling me to put that in htaccess. Thank you.

just install wordpress normally, then rename the index.php to index2.php.
The old index.html will then be called and you can view the site by manually calling index2.php.

Personally, I always install WordPress in a subdirectory, then move it all into the root directory once the project is approved.
This requires some fiddling with the database later on, since all uploads etc. are saved as absolute links, but it's simple when you have access to your phpMyAdmin.
    SQL command on my site.
