[resolved] Keep index.htm page while editing WP index.php (7 posts)

I will be auto-installing WP from cPanel and then adding a 3rd-party WP 3.0 theme as the main website (versus a blog site). I currently have a "coming soon" index.htm page with contact info.

My question is: Will I be able to install WP engine/theme to the root without losing the index.htm while I'm customizing the WP theme?

I guess what I'm trying to find out is will my WP index.php page take precedence over my index.htm page?

I know WP has security settings, however, I don't know what the public will see if I set the security to private while I'm editing the site. I need to have the public view the contact info while I'm updating the WP theme site.

    Any helps would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

will my WP index.php page take precedence over my index.htm page

That depends upon how your server is configured. You may need to ask your hosts about this.

The server precedence is: php, html, htm, shtml, pl, cgi ...

There's a redirect within the cPanel, could I use that to redirect index.php to index.htm? If I can what will happen if I want others to view the edited WP index.php file?

Have you thought about installing WP in a sub-folder and then using this method to allow it to take over the root domain when ready?

Hmmm, installing to a sub, then move main blog to root is a possibility. I briefly looked over the instructions and looks a bit complicated for my needs and ability.

The chances of not getting this right "the first, or the third time" seems too great for the task at hand.

I only have an index.htm page which serves as my "coming soon" page/placeholder.

How about this: If I set the security to "private" what would the public see when they visit the site?

    Thank you.

Would not a "redirect" work such as redirect .htaccess?

    esmi,

After thorough research, I believe you are right. The best way to keep the index.htm "coming soon" page up while working on the WP index.php site is to install WP in its own directory then move WP core to the root.

Because my server's precedence is php, html, htm...etc., I wouldn't be able to do a redirect because I need others to view the edits without having them login.

    Thank you.
