[resolved] JetPack Publicize creating malformed links in facebook (29 posts)

    Using JetPack v2.3.5

Since yesterday, I think, links produced by Publicize and pushed to my facebook page are malformed. Essentially, they seem to be missing out categories (which are part of the permalink path structure) and include a facebook suffix.

I think the suffix is usually there, anyway, but is normally hidden.

As an example, if I were to post an article with the URL:

    http://www.moshville.co.uk/news/2013/08/test-4/

...then the related facebook post has a link such as:

    http://www.moshville.co.uk/2013/08/test-4/?fb_source=pubv1

I have removed and re-added my facebook account from the Publicize settings (as detailed elsewhere), which did not help. I also checked and clicked "Save Settings" in my General and Permalink settings in WordPress, just in case they needed a "nudge".

At least I have spotted that I'm not alone with this problem, and that it affects Twitter as well (though I don't use that function so wouldn't have spotted it myself), so at least I know it's not an issue with facebook itself.

    Thanks for any help!

To follow on, I've another blog which is publishing via Publicize just fine. However, it's not using a "complex" permalink - just dates plus article title.

Both blogs are running on the same server, but discrete databases/instances of WP.

    Same issue. Leads to 404.

Could you all try to reset your Publicize connection, as explained here:
    http://jetpack.me/support/publicize/#reconnecting-facebook

Let me know if it helps!

@GeekChunks Could you post your site URL here so I can have a look?

If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via this contact form:

@IainPurdie Thanks for trying too. I'm not giving up on you! I'm trying to find out what are the similarities between your site and @GeekChunks's.

    Hey Jeremy,

Thanks for your help so far. Just wanted to add a litte more data. I did a couple of tests with just a video this morning. All I changed was the Permalink settings. The links changed but they both still go to a 404.

You can check them out here: https://www.facebook.com/GeekChunks

The post that actually pulled an image pulled the wrong one. On a side note I recently changed from a theme that used Feature Images (Genesis Framework) to one that does not (TwentyThirteen), at least it doesn't require it so I don't use it. I still insert an image at the top of the post in the article body.

    Thanks!

    Mr Chunks,

I think the image thing is unrelated and possibly a facebook issue. I've found recently that if I copy a URL from the address bar of my browser and paste it in as part of a new post on facebook, it sometimes doesn't pull an image through.

JetPack/WordPress would have nothing to do with this, would it?

As an aside, Google+ is even worse for doing this and often leaves "broken link" icons which, when clicked, take you to the image so the links most certainly aren't broken.

If I manually post a link to the article into Facebook it will pull all the data and work correctly as far as posting the correct link. It will also pull an image whether or not on is associated with the post. The test posts I did this morning don't have images associated with the posts so I'm not sure why Facebook and or JetPack chose the random images.

Hey everybody. We're having the exact same problem on our Unreality TV site. We use categories as part of our permalink setup, and when Publicize posts these to the Facebook page, it's dropping the category from the link. Here's the link to our Facebook page (the links that *do* work are from a separate WordPress install where permalinks are simply post_title).

    https://www.facebook.com/unrealitytv

Obviously changing our permalink structurwe at this stage is not an option. Is it worth backtracking to an earlier version of Jetpack?

I'm afraid that won't help, since the problem doesn't appear to be linked to a change in the Jetpack plugin files. We're still looking into the problem, and I'll post again here as soon as we find a solution.

I've been having the same problem for more than a week. Neither of the tests are working, whatever I change.

    Thanks for updating us

You don't need to do anything, we have fixed the problem on our end, on the Jetpack servers.

Sorry to take a while posting as I've been out this evening. The posts I had scheduled to pop up earlier seem to have posted through to facebook fine again.

    Yay!

Hi there, I still have the problem. Links that are published trough Publicise on Facebook don't have thumbnail. Also I noticed that they are recognized as website link not as an article. It all started 3 days ago. All posts before, when their links are pasted into Facebook, have thumbnail shown, and after that posts during the last 3 days are corrupted and don't show properly on Facebook. Here is the example:
    Corrupt one: http://nokiamob.me/2013/08/26/video-odlican-demo-mogucnosti-povecanja-u-fotografijama-nakon-snimanja/
    Good one: http://nokiamob.me/2013/08/25/dostupna-nova-verzija-whatsapp-aplikacije-za-s40-nokia-uredaje-5/

I tried to disconnect Jetpack few times, I checked for bad plugins but found nothing. Please can you help because this error is so irritating.

@themightym Your problem is different from the issue mentioned above. It seems that your site currently blocks the Facebook bot from crawling your site.

You can see what Facebook sees by entering one of your posts' URLs in Facebook Debugger:
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fnokiamob.me%2F2013%2F08%2F25%2Fdostupna-nova-verzija-whatsapp-aplikacije-za-s40-nokia-uredaje-5%2F

This 403 error appears because Facebook isn't able to crawl the page to gather information for the post previews.
If you use a security plugin that blocks access to your site in any way, you will want to configure it to allow access to the Facebook bot.

If you do not use such plugin, I would suggest that you contact your hosting provider to let them know about the issue.

    Thanks!
