[resolved] Jetpack and admin bar not appearing on page (20 posts)

I had a problem with a plug-in which has since been resolved. To resolve the problem I had to demote my Admin account to a subscriber, then promote it back to Admin. In doing this my Jetpack stats stopped working.

I disabled my Jetpack installation then re-activated it. This required me to reauthorize Jetpack with WP, which I did. Things seem to be working fine as I can see my stats and other services are working and visible in the Dashboard.

The problem is my Admin bar is still missing. I can't see my stats across the top of my blog anymore, I can't quickly access the dashboard by clicking the link in the upper left corner anymore and it doesn't show my logged in status and drop down to my account in the upper left corner anymore. My entire admin bar is missing.

Any ideas how I can get it back?

I've tried everything at this point. The admin bar is only visible from the dashboard. From the site's home page it's missing.

I disabled Jetpack again and reenabled it. Nothing.

I deactivated and reactivated notifications thinking that would help. Nothing.

I switched themes and it was still missing. I switched back to my theme, it's still missing.

I've disabled every plug-in and it's still missing.

    Help!

Is there a support number somewhere for me to call since no one seems to be familiar with my problem?

No, sorry, these forums are the only support available. Do note that this is a long holiday weekend in the U.S. and the JetPack support people (who work for Automattic) may not be working on the weekend. Since it's only been a day, that's really not a long time.

If this problem has to do with more than just JetPack - based on your other thread - http://wordpress.org/support/topic/i-cant-add-a-new-post-but-others-can?replies=22

I'd continue in the other forum - sounds like it may be more than JP.

    Thank you for the response.

They sent me over here. What caused the issue was demoting my Admin account to a subscriber then promoting it back to an admin. When I did that, my Jetpack stopped working properly and hasn't returned. Disabling all the plug-ins again hasn't corrected the problem.

So is the rest of your site working correctly?

If not have you reinstalled WP?

If the problem remains when you deactivate plugins and switch themes, I wonder if it might cause by some cookie issues. Could you please try clearing out your cache and cookies?

When I did that, my Jetpack stopped working properly and hasn't returned.

Could you give me more details about this? What happens when you go to the Jetpack menu in your dashboard, and try to disconnect, then reconnect to WordPress.com? DO you receive a specific error message?

The rest of the site is working correctly. The admin bar appears in the Dashboard, just not on the main site anymore (when logged in as admin).

I have cleared my cache and nothing has changed, it's still not working. I've gone to the site in a clean virtual machine using a browser I've never used to access the site before just to be sure, and it's not working in that browser either.

The problem remains when all other plugins are deactivated.

When I disconnect from Jetpack and reconnect, it goes through the normal routine of authorization and no errors are given. Jetpack seems to be working, it's just not appearing on the landing page as it once was.

I was having a problem with a plugin, all of my posts (just mine) were blank but my other contributors' posts were working fine. He had me create a new admin account then demote my original Admin account to a subscriber. I then promoted the original Admin account back to an admin and deleted the new account entirely. Somewhere in this process the task bar stopped appearing.

I've tried disabling all plugins several times.
I've switched themes a couple of times and it doesn't appear for any theme.
I've now cleared my cache and it's still not appearing.

I have not tried reinstalling WP. I've never done this, are there any risks?

Could you post your site URL, so we can have a look at your site?

The admin bar might be missing from the frontend if your theme doesn't include the wp_footer function, for example:

Thanks! The wp_footer() function seems to be there.

If the admin bar still doesn't appear, even after deactivating all plugins and switching to one of the default themes, I'm not sure what else we can do to help.

it would be worth installing a fresh installation of WordPress to try to reproduce the issue on your server.

Jetpack seems to be working, it's just not appearing on the landing page as it once was.

I'm not sure I understand that part. Could you post a screenshot here, so I can better understand issue? You can use http://snag.gy/ to share your screenshot with us.

What's the process for installing a new installation of WP over my existing installation? Is there a page that details the process? I assume this can be done without erasing the content of the site.

Alright, I get it now. You don't actually have any issues with Jetpack itself, the only problem is that the admin bar won't appear on the frontend of your site.

Before to try to reinstall WordPress, I would suggest that you check for Javascript errors that may block the admin bar. You can do so by opening the Javascript console in your browser:
    http://webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/8525/how-to-open-the-javascript-console-in-different-browsers

If you see any errors there when you're logged in, it might help us understand what's wrong with your site.

What's the process for installing a new installation of WP over my existing installation? Is there a page that details the process? I assume this can be done without erasing the content of the site.

I don't know of such page, but rest assured: as long as you don't delete the contents of the wp-content folder, you won't delete any content from your site. You can delete all the other files and replace them with a fresh WordPress installation. You also want to keep a backup of the wp-config.php file, since it contains all the information to connect to your site's database.

What tab on the Chrome console should I look at for errors? On the "Console" tab I see this:

Resource interpreted as Font but transferred with MIME type application/octet-stream: "http://www.thebangswitch.com/wp-content/themes/Underfire/fonts/BEBAS___-webfont.woff". http://www.thebangswitch.com/:297
    GET http://lz0.gstatic.com/gen_204?ct=sbgdjuio lz0.gstatic.com/gen_204?ct=sbgdjuio:1
    GET http://lz0.gstatic.com/gen_204?ct=zanhnfqf lz0.gstatic.com/gen_204?ct=zanhnfqf:1

The two "GET" lines start with red x's which I assume are errors.

gstatic seems to refer to Google resources. I don't think it's what's creating the issue here, but could you deactivate all plugins that add Google Badges to your site, or use Google Resources?

I finally figured it out on my own... it took forever, but I wanted to share the fix in case others encountered the same problem.

A database setting (show_admin_bar_front) was set to false for my admin user. This was done inadvertently by following instructions given to my be a WP tech here on the forum to correct another bug I had encountered. You can see that discussion here:

Now everything is working as it should.
