This "Web Designer" guy, Austin Passy from http://www.frostywebdesigns.com kicked me out of a website that I didn't owe him money on. I owed him for another website....totally unethical but ANYWAY, I paid him, his money cleared and now he is refusing to return my administrative powers for MY WEBSITE.

This is incredibly frustrating. I have put alot of time and energy into my website and I wonder if it's even legal that he has kicked me out of my own website...and I've paid him so now he has no excuses.

What should I do? Is there anyway I can legally take my website back.

    DESPERATE...PLEASE HELP

    Contact your hosting provider?

I did contact them and they said that because WordPress is separate that they can't do anything.

I cannot believe that someone has locked me out of my own website!! I just googled his information and on his twitter it says he's in Cabo San Lucas until god knows when!!!

    PLEASE HELP...any suggestions...

Is there anyway that I can get my administrative powers back without waiting around for this jerk to give it back to me???

    Please help

If you have access to the host, back up everything but the users folder then delete everything and reinstall wordpress. Restore your folders and it should be all yours. I had something similar happen to me except the little rat changed the password on my whole host. As if it was ever his!

Archonic, thank you so much for the advice.
I've already called godaddy and changed my hosting password...however I have NO IDEA how to do what you just told me to do. and I'm really scared that I might lose my website...

Is there a form or step by step advice as to how I can do this?

Okay, so you're on GoDaddy and you have access to the hosting account.

First thing, check the FTP settings, change the password for that. That prevents him from blocking you.

Now, you have FTP access to the site, so you can follow these instructions to take control of the WordPress installation.

Follow these instructions to change the admin password. Use Method #4 or Method #5 given. GoDaddy has phpAdmin available to you if you go to the MySQL Databases section. You can find the database username and password in your site's files, in the wp-config.php file.

Once you're in as the admin user, you can delete his user account, or whatever.

If you have any problems, email me and I'll walk you through it more: otto@ottodestruct.com

I actually have no idea. It's a big move for sure. I'd start by googling how to manually backup wordpress. There's tons of plugins but those assume you have access!

If you've now blocked access to your hosting from this person, I'm imagining you could do a big of PHPMyAdmin-ing to get wordpress back.

Go to my hosting account, manage account, databases. Find the database which corresponds to wordpress and select manage via phpmyadmin (or whatever it says, cannot remember for sure).

The database should contain a table call wp_users. Select this table, and on the top tabs select INSERT

Add a user_login value. This would be your username for wordpress login.

Enter a value for user_pass. It is important that for this one, in the functions drop-down, you select MD5.

    Click GO

Remembering these values, go to wordpress and try logging in. If login is successful, you should be able to delete the other user and effectively take back control of WP. Do not delete any users from the database until you are sure you can get in and all is working for you.

Be sure to delete or change any existing FTP accounts for your host if that seems like it might be an issue.

    Any help?

    J
