[resolved] It's 2011—and still no subtitles? (7 posts)

I'm currently attempting to find an easy way of adding a simple subtitle to my wordpress blog, and I'm a bit perplexed over how difficult such a basic and obvious task this is.

Perhaps I'm just being a moron and I'm not looking in the right places? This has to be the case! I've tried installing two different subtitle plugins for WordPress—neither of them seem to work with the latest version. Is there any plugin out there for this type of functionality, or do I in fact really have to start playing around with manually added code to make this a reality?

As an aside, I think WordPress should add this to its core. It's a very basic feature that shouldn't require hacks or plugins to make use of, in my opinion. < / rant >

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by "subtitle"? Do you mean a tagline - as in Settings -> General?

    Hi Esmi,

I can see where my original post was ambiguous. What I'm looking for is the ability to place subtitles in posts, rather than just titles, like so:

    POST TITLE: ______________
    SUBTITLE: ________________

Can you post a link to your blog? I'd like to see it.

Seems like what you might be after is called a "byline" sometimes. One solution may be to create a custom field.

By taking a minute to search the plugins, you can see that there are also some other possible solutions. Here's one that looks like what you want.

    SubHeading

"Adds the ability to easily add and display a sub title/heading on both posts and pages."

I recommend setting it to automatically append the subtitle before the content. That will also let you adjust the "H" size.

    @ClaytonJames:

"Subheading" was the exact plugin I needed; I installed several other prior to this, and none of them worked right. I still noticed it wasn't a painless plugin install, however: I had to insert some minor php code onto my template (index.php) page and style the subheading with CSS.

Don't get me wrong...this IS a solution, and I thank you for suggesting it; the blog's posts look good now. I just feel we shouldn't have to go through this step for what I feel is a very basic writing feature that should have been included in the core originally.

Needless to say, this problem is solved: I now have subtitles for my posts! Gratitude.

While I don't necessarily share your opinion on this one, I do understand your viewpoint. To me, the byline, or subtitle often seems to be a feature specific to news or magazine oriented themes. It feels like something that just lends itself more appropriately to theme design, custom fields and plugin territory. But you never know, and a good idea is certainly always worth suggesting!

    Glad it worked for you!
