• Ahoy!

I’m trying to move a wordpress installation from a subdirectory into the root. Easy, right? There are plenty of resources on that. There’s even a page in the wordpress codex about it. I followed the instructions (improperly) and broke my site. The codex instructs you to change your site’s location in settings, but then warns you that this method isn’t WP3 compatible. So what method is?

I moved all the site’s files and folders into root, which currently causes a 403 error on the front page and a 500 error if I try accessing any page by name. How do I fix this?

Any help would be thoroughly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi!
The instruction provided in the article you referenced are exactly the same (up to this point) as http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress instructions. Except that in the Moving WP article the provided the added cautionary note, as follows:

    4. In the box for WordPress address (URI): change the address to the new location of your main WordPress core files. << not WP3 compatible
    5. In the box for Blog address (URI): change the address to the new location, which should match the WordPress address (URI). << not WP3 compatible

Note the “not WP# compatible” – so what are we supposed to do if it’s not compatible??

We actually did what was instructed in 4 and 5 – and that’s what crashed the site. So at least we have confirmed that indeed it is NOT WP3 compatible.

But moving a site from a staging location to the root is a pretty basic operation – how can this everyday operation be impossible using the latest and greatest WP3?

I’ve moved several blogs since WP 3.0 was released with the following steps:

    1. Change the two URLs in Settings/General to the new location.

    2. Move all of the WordPress files to the new directory.

    3. Re-save your permalink structure at Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel. If WordPress cannot automatically edit the .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.

    4. Confirm the “Store uploads in this folder” setting at Settings/Media in your admin panel and re-save (even if nothing has changed).

How do I launch the WP administrative panel, since I can no longer open WP at all?

If you moved the files before changing the URLs at Settings/General, you’ll have to access your WordPress database via phpMyAdmin (most hosting providers offer this in their control panel) and manually change the siteurl and home values.
