• When I started my humble blog about 2 1/2 years ago I quickly lost control of the comments to spammers. I shut comments off a while back, but still have almost 144,000 of them, of which no more than about 100 are legitimate. I want to delete the junk, but if there’s a way to do it through WordPress that doesn’t involve working with a page of 20 or so comments a time I haven’t found it yet.

My hosting company package includes phpMyAdmin for accessing MySQL data bases, and the question I have is this: If I use this function to delete all or most of the comments outside of WordPress, will doing so break anything within the blog? An answer to this, or any informed suggestions on how to go about deleting all but a few comments (or all of them if that’s the only feasible alternative) will be welcome.
