• We had this blog:
    http://fictionaboutscience.com/

And then created a website. In order to MERGE the blog into the website, we exported the blog contents, and then imported the XML file into the website. This appeared to work well, and if you click “Blog” , everything from the above Blog is there.
    http://kirksmith-novelist.com/

    Two Glitches:
    1. Not seeing a way to EDIT the menu or change out the header image for the blog now that it’s been imported into the website

    2. from within the website, if you go to the blog, one link within the blog menu (about this blog) still displays the blog’s old, separate URL. Can’t fathom why this one link did not turn out properly like all the others did. Eventually, we will phase out that separate URL — which again makes me wonder – how to edit the menu or the header images on the blog now that it’s been imported into the website. We can’t close down the blog until we have this figured out!?

Maybe I’m missing something, or doing this in a complicated way. Any suggestions are desperately needed. Thank you!

  • 1. What theme are you using? Where did you download it from? What happens if you use the default Twenty Fourteen theme with all plugins deactivated?

    2. Looks like that link was added as part of your site’s custom menu.

Good morning — we are using Canvas for both (by Woo Themes)

I’m beginning to think the problem is that when I “exported” the blog, I selected to export “All contents” — this would include the blogs theme as well as posts, correct?

And then, I imported all of that — the blog’s theme, posts, etc — into the website, which already has a theme, and I wanted the blog to “adopt” this same theme.

Last night, I did another “export” in the blog, this time selecting only “Posts”, nothing else. Then imported that into the website. No change. I suspect it’s because I’ve already imported the blog’s theme in an earlier import?

So, as it is, there is NO WAY within the website dashboard where I can edit the MENU in the blog because that menu is still “living” under the separate theme and all its configurations.

Does this sound like a possibility? I wish there was a way to easily UN-import everything that got imported and start fresh, this time importing ONLY POSTS.

Thanks for your help — any suggestions or advice would be very greatly appreciated!

No – just the site’s content. Themes. menus, plugins and other settings are not imported. What happens if you use the default Twenty Fourteen theme with all plugins deactivated?

Themes. menus, plugins and other settings are not imported.

Well, in this case it looks like they may have been!??

If you look closely, you can see that the BLOG still retains its own separate and different menu and different header image (I realize the website and the Blog look very, very similar, and that was done on purpose — at first we were going to leave them completely separate, then decided it was better to merge)

    <sigh!>

Well, in this case it looks like they may have been!??

If you used Tools-> Export/Import, that’s simply not possible. The scripts concerned simply do not include themes, plugins, menus, widgets etc. Perhaps the site was moved by following the instructions in Moving_WordPress – which is completely different?

Er — I did use something (whose name escapes me now but I’ll look it up) – for “moving” a WP blog or website. Then went into the Kirk Smith website and imported the XML file this thing grabbed off the blog, which evidently included theme, menus, and all.

    Yikes. What to do?

I suppose I’ll have to go into cpanel or somewhere in order to find and delete the other theme? I’ve made a mess, haven’t I??
