Issue with WordPress 3.4 and Plugins (17 posts)

For some reason, I didn't have a smooth update to WordPress 3.4 this weekend. Please note: I successfully automatically updated my other websites to WP 3.4. Anyway...I updated my personal development site to WP 3.4 and it was a disaster. My theory is...The theme I was using wasn't compatible. I know, I know. I should have used one of the WP themes before I updated.

I manually installed WP 3.4, but it's still causing issues with my plugins. I deleted the majority of my plugins except for WP plugins such as Askimet, All in One SEO, etc. Lo and behold, I installed Jet Pack from WordPress and that didn't work. I'm perplexed and don't know how to 'fix' the problem. Help!

    Cheers,
    Amandah

Can you please describe in detail about the issues you are facing?

Are you able to view the site? What is the site URL?

If the homepage is blank and you are unable to access dashboard, take a backup of your theme through FTP and delete the theme. If this doesn't help, rename your plugins folder and create a new empty plugin folder under wp-content.

Please note: I deleted the theme I was using and now am using Twenty Eleven.

The issue is that the plugins are interfering with some themes. For some reason when I activate my plugins and use the Genesis/StudioPress Lifestyle theme and or the WordPress Twenty Eleven theme, I receive error messages such as http://misticcafe.com/wp-admin/plugins.php?activate=true&plugin_status=all&paged=1&s= Today, I uploaded the Jetpack plugin from WP and it caused an error similar to the one above.

I renamed my original plugin folder to plugin.old and created a new plugin folder in my wp-content folder. The only plugin I have activated is the All in One SEO Pack. I deleted all of my other plugins.

My website MisticCafe.com http://misticcafe.com/ is visible. I can now login to the admin area. I couldn't yesterday.

I'm confused because I use Genesis/StudioPress themes for my other two websites and didn't have an issue updating to WP 3.4. I also updated one of my other websites that had a different theme, and I didn't have any problems.

    Best,
    Amandah

Genesis/StudioPress themes are fully compatible with WordPress 3.4 and the reason for the problems can be elsewhere. You may activate Genesis based theme and see if it works.

I did activate my new Genesis/StudioPress theme and it had issues with plugins. I posted my concern in the StudioPress forum; I'm waiting for a response.

As I mentioned in my comment above, I didn't have a problem updating my other websites to WP 3.4. The only issue I can think of is the theme I was using. Had I switched my theme to Twenty Eleven or Twenty Ten before I updated, I may not be in the situation I'm currently in.

Most of the cases I dealt with are related to plugin incompatibility, and in some cases the themes. I excluded Genesis because StudioPress updated Genesis and I am using it in three of my sites and I faced no problems while updating WordPress. Also note that even an inactive plugin can cause problems (delete them).
    What plugins are you using?

The only plugin I have activated is All in One SEO Pack. I deleted WordPress Jetpack, Stats, Askimet, Si-Captcha for WordPress, Yoast SEO, WP-DB Manager, WP-Greet Box, TweetMeme, and Twitter-Facebook-Google Plusone-Share. The irony is I use these plugins on other websites.

I too use a StudioPress theme for my freelance writer business website and my website for writers; I didn't have an issue with updating to WP 3.4.

    I don't know what's wrong. It's a conundrum.

From what you describe above and after visiting the site I do not find any problems.

Now can you tell me what this http://wizpert.com/wizapi/widget?beta_key=3ba42&view=218&ep=1857&size=standard is all about?

Here's a link to Wizpert http://wizpert.com/faqs It's a site for life coaches, career coaches, business coaches, travel experts, etc. who are invited to sign up as 'experts.' People contact 'experts' through Wizpert to receive consultation and guidance on whatever it is they need.

It is a widget. Right? And it is in your site directory. Just save it to your computer and delete it from your site and see what happens.

Yes, it's a widget for 'experts' to place on their website to let people know they can be found on Wizpert. Are you saying the 'widget' can be interfering with my WP 3.4 update? I use a widget on another website and it's okay.

Possibly. What is the harm in removing it and checking if that widget is the problem?

I replaced the widget with a different one, different coding and was able to upload TweetMeme and a Captcha plugin. Both of those plugins worked. I'll remove the coding, again, and try uploading other plugins. Thanks for your help!

    Hi Amanda,

You say that plugins are working on other site but not in current site. Did you cross checked server permissions (Try giving 755 permission to wp-content folder recursively using FTP or shell access), is there some restriction given over plugin folders. If plugins are creating problem for your site you can view it's performance by installing P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler). If nothing works try, re-installing everything. Take the backup of database, themes and uploads before doing any changes.

I was close. I activated my StudioPress theme with the new plugins and I received a wp-admin error message. Maybe I should delete my wp-admin file and upload a new one.

    I'm not a techie so I don't understand giving 755 permission to wp-content. :) I'll check out the P3 Plugin Performance Profiler.
