Is WordPress Appropriate for a Small Town Website? (6 posts)

I maintain the website of the small town that I live in as a volunteer. Currently it is about 10 years old, all HTML, and due for an overhaul. I've used WordPress for other blogs and/or simple sites, like it, and am familiar with it. I would like to use WordPress for the town website, but I have questions as to if WordPress can do what I need it to.

The front page would function much like a normal blog - there would be a fixed/sticky announcement, and a space for news, notices, etc. There would also be a number of static pages that don't change much i.e. - a page for each town office, as well as things like dog regulations, garbage pickup, etc. I would also need to have a place and means to create links to PDFs or other files that I would upload periodically. The last feature that is required is a calendar - this could be a WordPress plugin, or it could be a link to or integration with a Google calendar.

Can WordPress do all of this? I've looked at Drupal and other CMS, and haven't been thrilled with any of them.

    Thanks.

    Ed

    Sure it can..

I think what you should be asking yourself, is whether this town's web space supports PHP and MySQL, if it's 10 years old, it may not even have PHP or MySQL (why would it, they'd have not needed it before), in which case the install won't get very far... ;)

WP is a perfect solution for a small town site. The only thing is getting the look and feel right. WP can handle almost every other requirement straight out of the box.

It can! If there's some money in the kitty, it may be worth getting a designer/developer to revamp the site appropriately so all you have to do is to update the content.

WordPress is the best cms. One click install, seo optimized and easily configurable with that huge database of plugins.
