   this is a image of what I am trying to achieve.

   I want to split the posts up like this in the home page and then when clicked be taken to a regular post format.

   It will be a mixture of editing the Css and some of the index.php (html, php and wordpress functions) layout depending on the theme authors code.

   Hope that helps somewhat

   these articles may give you something to start with:
   Posts in Columns – A New Twist on an Old Problem
   Playing with columns – stacking posts in a grid

   but there are many other approaches to it:
   web serach for 'wordpress multi-column posts' or 'wordpress grid layout' or similar

   you also might be able to just use css if the post output can stay unchanged.
