Is there any reason to use other blog systems? (8 posts)

I've been digging through WP info for about a week, and it seems like a 'near' perfect blog platform.

Is there ANY reason to even CONSIDER another platform?

    (besides hosting issues...)

If you don't want to mess with MySQL or haven't a clue as to what MySQL is, use a service like Blogger? Just create an account and use their free hosting service blogspot.com and your're on your way.

That's a reason to use something other than wordpress.

actually, yes there is.. if you want multiple blogs, with one database and no multiple installations. There is MU wordpress, of course, but b2evolution is leaps and bounds beyond that.

There are lots of reasons to think about the blogging platform / software you decide to use, particularly given that a great deal of development is going into blogging solutions these days.

One of the primary things to consider when thinking about which solution to use is, "How much control do I want over how my blog behaves?"

If you're not interested in customizing your blog (and I'm not talking so much about its appearance, but about its functionality), then you might be better off with one of the hosted blogging solutions, such as TypePad or Microsoft's MySpace. These are pretty much "sign up and start writing" solutions, and while they offer some customizability, the assumption is that you're generally happy with the features the solution offers right out of the box.

If you'd like to be able to add and change the functionality of your blog, then you'd probably be better off considering a solution that lets you upload a blog application to your own web site, since these will allow you access to the code itself. Good examples are MovableType and, of course, WordPress.

Of the two (and, admittedly, I'm biased), I'd go with WordPress. This is not to say that MovableType isn't a great blogging solution, but to acknowledge that WordPress has the strength and robustness of an opensource development community behind it.

So, to answer your question: "it depends." It's very unlikely that you'll throw something at WordPress that it can't handle. It has a strong content management and add-on plugin engine behind it. It has a good community supporting it. If you have the small amount of technical know-how required to install WordPress (setup a database in MySQL, ftp files to your own web site etc) then I personally believe you would not regret for a moment using WordPress as opposed to another solution.

    Much warmth,

b2evolution has severe problems with spam handling and no plugins to make up for the shortfall in the core program. Also, the multiuser setup of b2evolution is actually worse than just having multiple authors on a single blog with wordpress from a security perspective.

I would consider another if you do not like WordPress, but then again, whats not to like ;)

whooami, I cut the useage of bandwidth from spam by 75% by converting a site from b2evolution to wordpress. So it has "more problems" than at least one other blogging platform (this one).
