• Hello. Sorry if this has been covered. My quick searches didn’t find anything…

Is there a way to search the wordpress code? Often I’m trying to find a snippet of code and I have to click through the templates or widgets, when (for example) with an HTML site I could simply use Dreamweaver to search the folder for a code snippet.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

  • I use notepad++, it has a “Find in Folder” feature.

Thanks to both of you. Since most of the updates I make to wordpress are within the actual editor, the files are not local, so “search in folder” really wouldn’t work without bringing the site files down every time, correct?

I was more looking for a plugin or other method that will allow me to find something within the wordpress admin so I can know which template to click on in the editor or which widget to open to make changes. Hope that makes sense.

It takes a bit of getting used to … but stumbling about for about 10 minutes I believe I would have to agree with @zeally and @t31os_ that Notepad++ may be the solution.

    FTP_Synchronization works just fine 🙂

also possible with the Google site: operator and svn

i know this is a little late, but if you’re on linux or os x just use grep
open up terminal, navigate to the folder, then type

    grep -irn "query" .
