[resolved] Is there a way to register from an external site? (3 posts)

I have seen a sharp uptick in "new user registration" emails for my blog. The registrations look legit as each one is quite unique and my site has been getting a lot of traffic lately so I'm not terribly surprised to get more interest - even though registering on my site gives those subscribers nothing extra. I also allow user registration with the default role being subscriber so I'm not worried about anyone hacking my site through this route (maybe I should be?).

So to the real question: How are these people registering to my site? I don't provide a link for them to register so the only way I see them registering is by manually entering mydomain.com/wp-admin and then selecting "register." It seems like a lot of random people to go through that much effort for no payout.

Does WordPress.com or some other external site provide options to register to WordPress sites? Does being a "subscriber" give these people any type of bonus over just using my RSS feed or going to my site from time to time? Just trying to make sense of this.

    Thanks!

    Is your site on WordPress.COM?

Those subscribers may well be spam - if you allow anyone to register that tend to happen.

    It is not on wordpress.com.

However, I just spent the last couple minutes reviewing those that have subscribed and I'm thinking they are all bots. I must just be getting a sharp uptick in bot spam attempts via registration.

Think I'll just turn it off.

Thanks for the quick response WPyogi!
