Is there a way to disable snow now so it won't happen next year? (11 posts)

    Hello.

I read the Welcome message but I can't find "Extend" in the support forums, so I wasn't sure where to post this. I hope this is the right place. If not, I hope someone can direct me to the right place.

I have not had the snow problem on my wp.com blog (though have had it on blogs I visit/subscribe to), but I have a paid wp.org site I'm building, and it's my understanding that next year, come December, it will start snowing until I opt out.

I read this thread about disabling it: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/let-it-snow-widget-removal?replies=3

    And others of its ilk.

However, when I look at Settings, I don't see anything about "Let It Snow," so I'm wondering if it only shows up in December? I would really like to be able to prevent this on my own blog and also tell other people how to opt out on their blogs. I wrote this post about why it's so important to me:http://aftergadget.wordpress.com/2013/01/23/waspish-wednesday-how-autoplays-let-it-snow-disable-visitors-to-your-website/

    Thanks for any help!

I don't think there is any way to disable it at this point - the option only shows up when the snow is on.

Also, for future reference these forums are to support self hosted copies of WordPress, not the hosted option on WordPress.com. If you are unsure of the difference please check out the article WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

    There is. See http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/12/03/oh-my-snow/

Thank you, esmi, I will look at that link.

David, thanks for chiming in. You might have missed it in my question, but I do have a self-hosted site; it's sharonwachsler.com. I'm still building it. That's the site I want to prevent snow on; it doesn't happen on my wp.com site.

Do you know what plugin you are using? The wordpress.com version may be rather different.

    Hi esmi.

I'm using Jetpack, and other than that it's just Akismet and Bad Behavior. I don't see "Let It Snow" on any of the settings pages that have been suggested, so maybe I don't have to worry about it showing up on my blog?

And yes, it's pretty different! I have gotten as far as I can on my own and now I'll probably be haunting the Weaver Pro forums for a while while I figure out the rest. (I hope I figure it out!)

Correct. You'd have to install a snow plugin to get the same effect. Self-installed sites are far more configurable than wordpress.com sites and should never implement anything that you:

    a) didn't want
    and
    b) don't have the option to turn off or delete.

Ahh sorry, I missed the "wp.org" in your post, I saw the first mention of .com and thought that's what you were talking about in the rest of the post.

    esmi, thanks for helping out.

No problem. It was After Gadget's "snow" post on her wp.com site that started off an interesting discussion on the issue over at http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/ And I've since pointed a couple of other people towards both the discussion and the original post in the hopes of stopping other sites implementing autoplay visual or audio plugins.

Yay! Thank you, esmi! You are my hero of the day.

I recognized your name from the Accessibility forum.
