i'm looking to add lots of new sites to my multi-site network.

is the manual way the ONLY way?
or is there some type of import feature?

ALSO, how can I have a deeper level of sub directories?
on a test, I tried to manually add:

    root/sub1/sub2/blogname

however, you can only use letters and numbers when creating the blog.
so WP MS, does not create the sub directory for you...

ideally, I would like to important a list of blog names that are at a deeper level than the root.

    thanks for the help

It's older but it may still work.

Nope, can't. At least I haven't seen how. What are you trying to do? Categorize the blogs?

Yes, for the most part, you'll have to manually create each blog. However, you can use WordPress' built-in export and import function to move over the content, pages, posts, etc., from another existing WordPress install. Just login, and look over near the bottom of the sidebar for the 'export' menu. For themes, plugins and uploads, you'll have to use ftp to retrieve them and reupload them into your new setup (note that uploads in multisite get placed in /blogs.dir/BLOGID/files/...).

As for blogs in subdirectories, it's not currently possible. Though, I'd love it if it were.

    thanks...
FYI. this is a new site, new blogs, etc. creating everything first -- adding content 2nd.

    say for example:
    i have http://www.all-animals.com

now i know there are 500 animals i want to start with and each have their own blog. also, want to organize (my own reasons) in different directories (ie. not all being off the root)

so, i wish i could automate the manual few steps to do this:
    http://www.all-animals.com/northamerica/snakes
    http://www.all-animals.com/northamerica/bears
    http://www.all-animals.com/northamerica/birds
    http://www.all-animals.com/southamerica/snakes
    http://www.all-animals.com/southamerica/bears
    http://www.all-animals.com/southamerica/birds

the point about the subdirectories, i would like to have any names/level deep/etc that i want... not all be at the root.

Andrea, will check that link out.
Person, i don't have existing blog, so I don't having anything to move

    THANKS

I can't remember if this will fake the urls for the different topics (categories) or not.

    Good place to start though.

    fyi.

i created a script that will do this :)
its wasn't hard, but it works for what i need.

basically, i edited this file /wp-admin/ms-edit.php

and basically only run /tweaked this part of the case statement:
    'addblog':

    :)
