is "lovethemac.com" legit? WordPress means of blocking? (5 posts)

Imagine my surprise at seeing one of my wordpress posts being used in an aggregate blog at "lovethemac.com". It seems to be automaically reposting articles from all over, based on category (many of which have nothing to do with the Mac). Is it just a ploy to sell Google ads? Wondering if I should consider using mod_rewrite to deflect links from that site, or if there is a more WP-centric way of handling referrers. Or just ignore it?

A high bit of irony their site sports a Creative Commons license...

I would not ignore it if you don't want them re-publishing your content. However, they seem to be acting as a feed aggregation site, in that they're just displaying feed summaries and pointing to the source. So it's not a situation where they're taking credit for the content.

It's up to you, but someone should contact the site admin about that CC license. It doesn't seem an appropriate thing to sport, considering.

  3. I'd say block it. They don't appear legitimate, nor do they appear concerned with any Mac-related news.

There are a lot of these out there. As long as they are only using excerpts (for technical search engine reasons) and are aggregating a lot of blogs, they are likely to result in increased traffic. Of course, it's your content and if you don't want it there, do what it takes to have it removed. I personally don't mind (of course, my site has a Creative Commons license stamped right on it, so they <b>know</b> it's allowed.)

here's one way of fighting back

I took the liberty of modifying the wp-rss2.php file so it includes a visible copyright notice in every post in the feed.

First thing your (RSS) readers will see is your excerpt from your post followed by a horisontal line and this underneath:

“© 2005 YOUR-BLOG-URL.com This RSS Feed is for personal non-commercial use only. If you’re not reading this material in your news aggregator, the site you’re looking at is guilty of copyright infringement. Please contact YOUR-CONTACT-DETAILS so we can take legal action immediately.

You can grab the modified wp-rss2.php file by clicking here
