I think a good way to deal with this is to use the Mixed Type and just select Default for every Type in the dropdowns. This way you could limit the number of ticks to only show 3 or 4 (or however many you want) and then also select which specific ticks you want to show by using the Offset parameter. 0 would show your first Default tick, 1 would show the 2nd default tick, 2 would show the 3rd default tick, and so on.
