Is it ok to not use multisite root? (6 posts)

Say for example I have multi-site setup:

    http://localhost/
    http://localhost/site1/
    http://localhost/site2/
    http://localhost/site3/

Do I have to use the root version?

Reason I ask is I have some quite complete re-writes taking place in the root for some forums in a sub-folder also, and I'm finding it impossible to get the re-writes to distinguish between root level perma links that belong to blog and those the below to forums. So assuming that i'm happyt to have site1 in my main URL (I may go with portal or home or something) can anyone forsee any issues with just doing a permanent redirect at the root level to my site1 by default?

    Many thanks

  2. You cannot have WP in a none root folder and have it redirect to root without some seriously fancy apache rewrites going on.

I mean keep WP installed in the root, but just not use the root blog, and instead redirect from root blog to site1 blog.

  4. Best practice would be to use the main blog as your portal, if you don't want to use it as a blog.

But, the simple answer is "yes". What I would recommend, if you really don't want to have any content at all on the root site, would be:

    1. install Page Links To,
    2. create a single page on the root site,
    3. set that new page to be the static Front Page for the root site,
    4. copy the URL for the site that you want to act as your front page (/site1/, /site2/, whatever),
    5. edit the page you created on the root site,
    6. paste the URL you just copied into the Page Links To metabox on the page edit screen.

Once you do that, anyone visiting your root site (http://localhost/) will be automatically sent to the subsite you chose.

Many thanks Curtiss, that was just the answer i was hoping for. As well as resolving my .htaccess conflict I have by having site0 using root, I'm also hoping that by using site1 as my main site i'll avoid the /blog/ entry that is inserted for site0 pages, and instead have a constistent /home/ in the url. thank again.
