I could really use private messaging on my WP site. I know there are some plugins that will give it to me. But I also understand Buddypress will be coming to single user WP very soon, so I hate to install one plugin and then within a few months change it out to the superior buddypress.
Can anyone give me any clue or insight into when it could possibly be out?
Maybe you could ask them? I figure they'd know more than we would over here.

You know developers never give dates.
True, we still don't know when WP and WPMU codebases will merge per Matt's announcement. BuddyPress will become a WP plugin then. Maybe version 3.0 or 4.0 or ... :-)

Oh yes, I forgot about that, mercime, that would likely be the key. I guess that's a big mystery too.
Yes, BP working on standard WP is dependant on as-and-when WPMU merges with WP. Depending on how the WPMU code is merged, BuddyPress shouldn't need to much work to support it.

Actually it WILL work with single user WordPress now. Exciting news! You have to use the trunk version of BuddyPress, but I've tried it with WP 2.9 and it seems to be working just fine. I have info on how to install it here: http://wpmu.org/buddypress-now-supports-wordpress-single-user-no-wpmu-required/
