Invalid RSS feed all of a sudden (9 posts)

Up until a few days ago my site's RSS was running fine. Then suddenly I get timeout messages from Feedburner. Here's the feed in question:

    machinemachine.net/feed

These error messages pop up when I try and run it:

error on line 15 at column 18: Unescaped '<' not allowed in attributes values

    Feedburner says:

The URL does not appear to reference a valid XML file. We encountered the following problem: Error on line 14: The value of attribute "href" associated with an element type "null" must not contain the '<' character.

This appears to be the glitchy line:

    <atom:link href="<?php self_link(); ?>" rel="self" type="application/rss+xml" />

If I take this out everything seems to run ok, but the feed is still slow returning. Why did this suddenly become a problem?

    many thanks

Wow, really glad I checked in here! Thanks

Am running a Wordfence scan now.

Did you know the signs and follow your nose to the malware? Or do you just check every site as standard?

    Thanks

I think I have solved my problems, but the securi.net profile runs on a cache, so I can't know for sure. Any tips for making sure I'm all clean?

Thanks. This could've been a lot worse if you hadn't be so quick to reply.

I'm still not sure if my site is fixed, due to sucuri cache, but having upgraded and fixed what I can my Feed problem has returned.

How are these two related? What's happened?

    Thanks

I am sorry, you are still infected.

How are these two related? What's happened?

An infected site can misbehave in several ways, including affecting your feeds. Sometimes your error your error logs can reveal what is going on. A close examination of all your site files, including WordPress core, themes, plugins, images/media and your database can reveal much more.

I think I have solved my problems

It is interesting to note that you claim that you solved all your problems. Shortcuts like just removing the code that indicated the infection or the removal of the infected file will not solve the problem. You have to read and follow the instructions in the resources/ links I cited above. Anything less will only leave back doors for the hacker to walk straight in.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks again.

I have cleaned my site. Sucuri.net agrees. But my feed troubles still remain.

Any ideas? It's driving me mad

  8. Have you tried deactivating all plugins? I can view your feed in my browser but when I go to a validator it isn't able to connect.

    http://validator.w3.org/feed/

Something's blocking those requests. Do you have anything unusual in your .htaccess file?

My site seems to be pretty slow to load in general, I think this might be causing the problem. I ran the P3 - Plugin Performance Profiler and all my plugins take about the same amount of time to run.

I'm starting to think maybe my hosting service is the problem (Godaddy) I have read a lot of complaints online. I have Super Cache running and have streamlined my database. What else can I do without jumping hosting ship?
