I will assume that you probably already have IT department support, a running web server in place, ftp and or ssh privileges, sql support, and that you know what all of those are, or have someone in your organization who does. That being said. You can install it exactly the same way you would install it on a server on the internet. The only difference is that when you are done, it will have an internal network address (10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x, or whatever your internal network private address scheme is). In short, that means you will most likely access it on your network by typing the internal IP address in the browser bar, rather than a"www" address. I would recommend installing it from a machine on your network, other than the server itself.
Here is a whole basket full of related info for you to look through at your leisure. There might be a useful up to date guide in there somewhere.

Good luck with your project!
Getting it working on a local network is no sweat. The real work starts when you try to logically organize data from 100+ departments and close to 1,000 users. Ouch.
I found that I used pages for almost everything, with Top Level pages being: Departments, Locations, Staff & Forms. Today I have 1831 pages. I'm saving Posts to be used for "News" type stuff. If you are importing a lot of info, use the WordPress export/import tool with Excel to batch import loads of data.
