I am helping a friend with her website. She keeps getting an internal server error 500. I'm thinking this has to do because she probably upgraded to a newer theme version/update.

Currently we both cannot login to her wordpress site at all by going to the wp-login area of her site - due to this error "internal server error 500".

Any suggestions on how to maybe getting in there and deleting some plugins? Or any other suggestions I should try and do?

That may be the case. Independent of WordPress, her web host should have error logs that will tell you where the problem is.

In the meanwhile try these ideas, they do not require access to the WordPress dashboard. FTP or ssh should work.

    - switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems. If you move her current theme directory (don't delete it) out of the wp-content/themes directory and visit http://her-wordpress-url/wp-admin/ then you may be able to login.

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    - re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.
