I was changing some code in the website editor and was presented with an error page when I tried updating it. I then tried to revert it to the normal coding, at which point I encountered a 500 Internal Server Error page.

Now I can’t login to any portion of the site or view it at all. I can’t even access the wp-admin page/dashboard/ect.

Does anybody know what happened and if I can recover from this?

Firstly, would recommend that you don’t edit core files. Looks like you may have corrupted something.

First thing I’d try is if you can get to your installation via ftp or cpanel, can you restore the file you were editing? Do you have a backup before you started?

The other thing I’d try is to find your .htaccess file in your WP root, and rename it to .htaccess.old. Then try to access your wp-admin again. This will force WP to create a new, bare .htaccess which might override the 500 ISE.

If not, try a re-install of WP.

Come back if no joy from that.
