The lack of an integrated document management system (DMS) suitable for large online libraries is a critical weakness in WordPress.
I'm talking about DMS's like DocMAN and Remository, both Joomla solutions. Or a plugin to put Knowledge Tree into a theme.
I have several WP sites, but our primary site is Joomla, simply because suitable DMS solutions exist.

that would be nice. I have been looking for tools to do this for a while now.

True that! I need a plugin that will let me put pdf's behind a registration form so that visitors can download sample chapters of my book after registering and I can get an export of their names & contact info to use in email marketing/newsletters.

Jep, I tried to use WPSearch together with the Lucene engine but failed.
Then I entered a request - after 4 weeks ist's gone.
I agree, it would be THE feature in WP - but I think time has not yet come for it because of a certain mindset here ... :-(

WP Download Manager may be able to help with downloading PDFs after entering a password. Don't think it'd be up to full DMS requirements but I've used it with a lot of success in the past for hosting documents and controlling version numbers / download counts etc.

A DMS is exactly what I'm looking for as well. I'm surprised that there isn't one already.
