    HI

I am going to convert someone's website to wordpress for them. It involves a complete redesign so I wont be keeping any css/layouts or importing the existing website, just simply building the site from fresh with existing content.

I appreciate the proper practice would be to build it on a local PC/development server then make it live and remove the old site, but I need to keep the current site live for a while, so I am going to install wordpress on the live site and start building it.

What I want to know is, Can I just pick create a new folder on the \public_html root and install it in there? With a seperate database of course. Could this in theory break the website or does it pose any concerns for any of you?

The other thing I wanted to double check is, when I want the site to go live, is this the correct process for redirecting the homepage to wordpress?

thanks for any help, I've been trying to contribute by voting for plugins that work etc.

    cheers

    Hi 99336655,

Installing WordPress in a subdirectory should not cause any issues with the current HTML site that is live.

The article that you're linking to describes how to keep the WordPress site in a new directory, instead of actually making it the top level directory (which is NOT what it sounds like you want to do). What I believe you want to do is move WordPress to a new folder after you've set it up. For more help with doing that, please see:
