There are themes that you might buy from third-party sites that give you a zip file that include all the resources for that theme, including source files. Try unzipping the zip folder that was given to you and looking for another zip folder inside with the name of the theme.
That second zip file should be the theme and you should be able to upload to your WordPress installation without an error.

The zip folder provided by themeforest may contain the whole package, including data import, license files, psd files, sub zip folder of the theme itself. It may also contain child theme, if applicable.
To proceed further you may try following steps:
1. unzip the main zip file you received
2. login to your site admin page. Once there, go to Appearance -> Themes
3. click on the “Install Themes” tab
4. click on the “Upload” link at the top of the page
5. click the “Choose File” button, select the sub-zip folder of your theme (and not the main zip file) from your local computer and press the “Install Now” button
