See Moving_WordPress. If you need help setting up a new database & user, you need to contact your hosts for assistance.
OK. The problem is that these instructions, they keep referencing accessing the old server which for which we do not have admin access..
I did follow this section, “Moving to a New Server” and the 2nd paragraph, “Note: If you are changing to a new server but same domain, all you need to do is edit wp-config.php with your new database/user information and upload everything as it is to your new server. “
So I copied the WP files to /server/domain/ (same domain name as old site) and created new database copying the database, user name and password from the wp-config.php file and then trying to access the /server/domain/ location I get
“Welcome. You see this page because you have set up your Web server for serving a new site, but have not uploaded the site content yet. “
I have not changed DNS settings yet to the new site so not sure if this is whey this is happening but my concern is changing DNS servers and then not having access to either site. (in case access to old files need to be obtained.)
Did you remove any index.html files in the new site’s root folder?
No the index.html file is there. I just renamed the index.html to indexx.html and I get this message:
“Error establishing a database connection”
So I checked the wp-config.php file and to see that the database, user and password are the same as the one I created.
I am not sure what the prefix of the database was on the previous server though if that matters here
Start by checking all of your database details.
I’m not knowledgeable as to what I should be looking for here. The backups/moves I’ve done before are not using the raw sql. Not sure what to check at this point.
Yes, thanks. That did it!
