Installing templates - what am I doing/not doing? (5 posts)

I've installed several templates and one thing that doesn't make sense to me is why my site doesn't look like the demo site that enticed me to install it? For the most part it seems everything is there but things like links for pages (about, contact, etc) don't show up. And it seems that because i'm able to customize the widgets as i see fit and have to arrange the layout myself there then isn't a way for me to get the site looking like the demo site right out of the box.

am i missing something or does everyone here upload the template they want and then have to spend time arranging the layout? i'd rather the layout come already prepared and then i can tweak if needed. basically i'm still in the test phase cause i can't get the site up an running the way i like. i see templates i'd like to use but none of them have that quasi "one click and you're done". i would think the only thing i need to do right out of the box is change the title of some sections, change default pics to my own and fill the sections with my own words. that to me is one click installation.

    To some extent, yes.

aren't there templates that you can just upload and once you activate they'll self-install? there just seems to be a significant difference between what my site looks like at first and what the theme's demo site looks like. also i have no need for blogrolls or any kind of tags on the bottom - how do i remove elements.

i know there's a wealth of info here, but i think that's the problem - too much info. a lot of it delves into coding and while i understand i should know some coding if i'm operating my own website a lot of the how-to's here are too intricate. i think that's the problem with open source. yes its free and you can do it yourself, but there's no "here, press this button and everything will be set up for you and all you have to do is post articles and rename some sections". its gotta be easier than this.

All themes should be usable "out of the box" but first you have to find the right theme to suit your needs.

links for pages (about, contact, etc) don't show up

You have to create the pages first. Installing a theme doesn't create the pages. Some themes use dynamic menus, which you can edit under Appearance -> Menus. Some don't and will automatically populate the menu with your pages.

fill the sections with my own words

You have to create pages and posts for the theme to display.

also i have no need for blogrolls or any kind of tags on the bottom - how do i remove elements

Appearance -> Widgets. From there it's just drag and drop. Some themes will use a default setup if you leave a widget area blank.

Up to this point, you don't have to delve into any code.
