Installing plugins

Hi
Question – I can install the basic wordpress – but how hard is it or how much coding do you need to know to install plugins. I know html and some asp, but not php.

Do you require a lot of coding experience to install the plugins or should I just go to wordpress.com? The problem with the latter is they don’t allow any advertising on the blog and I want to add that right away.
