Installing Plug-ins (5 posts)

I'm trying without success to install two plug-ins:

    Visitor Map Who's Online
    Contact Form 7

Each time I try to install, either directly from the Plug-in menu page, or by downloading them to my esktop and then uploading them, the install stops at either 'downloading install package...' or 'Unpacking package...'.

Please help. Both are zip files. do I need a special software to open these zip files (my comuputer can open other zip files just fine)? Help?

Try adding AddType x-mapp-php5 .php to the top of your WordPress .htaccess file.

    Esmi,

I'm not a programmer. Please tell me where I add 'AddType x-mapp-php5.php and where I would find that place to add it. Thanks!

FTP into your site (or use whatever file management application your host provides) and look in the folder that contains WordPress for a file called .htaccess. You have to adjust your ftp software to ensure that is showing all files - even hidden ones - as this file is often hidden by default.

If you find the file, download it to your computer and open it in a plain text editor (such as Notepad). Do not use a word processor like MS Word.

If you can't find the file, create it - again a plain text editor.

At the very top of the file, add AddType x-mapp-php5 .php followed by 1 or 2 line breaks. Save the file and re-upload it to your WordPress folder.

Thanks for your help. My web host is 1and1. Will your instructions work on that site? Do I go to the FTP section there, as I'm not sure where the file management area is there. Thanks!
