When I try to install a plug-in It takes me to a page called "Connection information"

    It gives me

    Hostname: (gives an IP address)
Username: (the user name we use for our hosting)
    Password: (wants this)

Is it at all related to the hosting company?? How do I find out the password?

I use that plugin on many sites and haven't seen that message. Can you download it locally then unzip it then upload it to the plugins directory via FTP?

THEN, when you go to your admin panel, you will see the plugin, unactivated. Activate it and see if you can use it without that message.

Can you ask your question more simply, I'm not that savvy with tech language.

I think it's a WordPress page, not anything to do with the plug-in

I'm taking off so I might be leaving you hanging here.

Download the plugin to your computer. It will be a .zip file. Double click it and it will expand into a folder.

Open your FTP client and upload the folder to the plugins directory in your web site's web space. If you don't know how to do this, try logging in to your web hosting companies control panel. They might have a FTP uploader built in to the control panel.

THEN, when you go to your WordPress admin panel, you will see the plugin, unactivated. Activate it and see if you can use it without that message.

It won't let me upload it on WordPress I get this message "Unable to upload to [part of my website URL] Is its parent directory writable by the server?"

My hosting company does not have an FTP uploader built into it.

Okay I got past the FTP page and NOW it says

Warning: touch() [function.touch]: Unable to create file E:\inetpub\vhosts\onlinecaring.com\httpdocs/wp-content/wp-unformatted.1.1.zip because Permission denied in E:\inetpub\vhosts\onlinecaring.com\httpdocs\wp-admin\includes\file.php on line 175

Download failed. Could not create Temporary file

Yikes, there is a hurdle every step of the way.

I'm back for a few. According to your error, it looks like you uploaded the zip file, not the unzipped ditrectory?

I did in the first of the two. Then I tried it unzipped as a .php file and the same error came up.

THEN I tried it through the "Install Now" button. I got past the "Connection Information" page and then the second message came up

After you unzip it, you will have a folder. Upload that folder in it's entirety to the plugins directory.

You have to upload via FTP, not the media uploader. This process is done outside of WordPress.

Where can I do that? My Hosting Company does not have an FTP uploader

You can download a FTP client or use FireFTP for FireFox. Your web hosting company will have instructions on how to do that. What is your web host?

I hope you don't have windows hosting. Make sure you have PHP 5 running too.

This is getting crazy. So I have the FireFTP up and running and it's connected to my webspace, but when I try to transfer the files it says it can't. Either a) there is no file or b) Can not STOR [Error 550]

For your FTP problems, try live support with your web host. If you have your web site's plugins directory in the right most pane and the folder you are trying to upload in the second pane from the left, you should be able to highlight the folder and click the right arrow in the middle.

For seeing if you have PHP 5 or not, it should be in your control panel somewherre. If they use C-Panel for instance, it will be in the left sidebar.

The only time I've seen problems like this before is when people had windows hosting instead of Linux hosting. Make sure you have Linux hosting. If not, have your hosting company switch you.

In your admin panel, there is a link under Plugins labled "Installed". it will be there. Just click activate and you are done.

To use the plugin to fix formatting problems in your pages or posts, look under the text box for Custom Fields. In the enter new field, type sponge. Now, the word sponge will appear in the drop down menu under add new custom field. For the value, type "1". You are done!
