I am looking to install wordpress on my computer. I read this tutorial about it and am wondering if wamp is the way to go for this. Do I still need to install WordPress and mysql database or will wamp have all that. Pretty simple question, just knew to this and am a little afraid of screwing up the installation.

I don’t use WAMP myself but I do use XAMPP. While neither of these apps have anything to do with WordPress what they will do is allow you to run WP on your PC. XAMPP (as well as WAMP) will install mySQL database and Apache webserver on your computer which WordPress needs to function.

Get it up and running, download WordPress, and setup your directory as if you were hosting it on the web. This is something all WordPress users should do. I run several installs locally for various reasons such as maintaining an offline backup of my live blog and for troubleshooting/experimenting. It’s a great way to learn the ins and outs.

okay so i did xampp and installed it, seems to be working. Just not sure because it brings up the command prompt. Now the question is where do i get the name of the database and mysql username. I get into command and it doens’t allow me to write anything. This all seems so foriegn to me, do that have one that isn’t command or is there a way without command to do this.

It just kind of freezes after it says

Apache and mysql are starting up on the command prompt. Then nothing else happens and the command goes blank.

    What do I do next.

i go into the control panel for xampp and mysql is not running. I hit start and it says busy and then mysql service started. However it doesn’t say running.

I don’t know why you are getting command prompts – I don’t. I have a standard GUI. Perhaps something went wrong during the installation. When I installed it the first time it didn’t work properly either. I uninstalled then reinstalled and it has worked great ever since.

There are several versions offered on the Apache Friends website. The package I chose is “XAMPP Windows 1.6.6a [Basic package] Installer 34MB” from here.

Also, Podz had a great tutorial on this here if you are interested.

The tutorial by Podz was written for XAMPP Lite but it’s easy enough to adapt.

    so i did this:

I deleted the original folder that I extracted the first time. Hopeing that would get rid of my first copy that gave me the command prompts. The instruction said to remove the directory so that is what I assumed i did. there was no uninstall.

than I went to the .exe file downloaded it and installed it step by step. Get to the part where it says to start mysql and error comes saying mysql service not started. So now i don’t know what do i uninstall this one. Is my first install still on my comp.

By the way the tutorial would have helped last night a little more. Just kidding. Thanks any help from anyone would be good. What do you think Len.

Is my first install still on my comp.

Assuming you initially installed one of the ZIP packages (as opposed to the installer version) then no it shouldn’t be on your comp anymore for it didn’t add any entries to the Windows registry. Prior to deleting the directory you did stop both services right? (apache.exe and mysqld-nt.exe)

As to why mySQL won’t start I’m not quite sure. On my pc using the installer version, it installed the actual services, which run automatically as soon as Windows starts. (which I have changed to manual – I don’t want them auto-starting) Not to steer you away from this forum but Apache Friends has an excellent support forum – you could try asking that question there.

After you have clicked your language and entered the program, click phpMyAdmin.

I get to this part but when I click the link it sends me to a completely blank page, does anyone know what I should do or am doing wrong. I am getting closer, it took two days just for me to get up to this point. Anyone got any ideas.

    Part I

You might want to check out this article…only difference is that they’re working with WAMP.

If you want a quick guide with XAMPP check out this post (it’s with the lite version but works the same way).
    here

Otherwise just google, there’s plenty of information on this topic. One little thing, if you want to use permalinks you need a little fix on your httpd.conf file (find and article here – just follow the first steps on the file mentioned…you don’t need the other stuff).

Well, normally it should not be a big problem to install XAMPP – even I managed to do it. 🙂

    Here is another nice HowTo:

We make an installation with Actual Installer.
